Tibetan Spaniels - Origin

Tibetan Spaniels are one of the few dogs that were bred centuries ago in Tibet. Tibet gave start to a few other breeds such as the Tibetan Mastiff, the Lhasa Apso, Shih-Tzu, and others. Called tenderly Tibbies, these dogs have retained their physical and temperament qualities over time. They still have keen sight and hearing, and make good watchdogs. Watchdogging was the main function of the Tibetan Spaniel. These dogs are said to have warned Tibetan monks about danger while lying comfortably on the walls of monasteries and observing surroundings. They were also used as bed warmers. There is also a version that Tibetan Spaniels were trained to turn the prayer wheels. However, this theory has not yet been proved and most breed lovers tend to believe the Tibetan Spaniel served mainly as a companion and watchdog.

Tibetan Spaniels - Recognition

The Tibetan Spaniel first appeared in England in 1898. Despite the early arrival of the breed to Great Britain, the dog acquired acknowledgement years later. This was due to a small number of dogs bred. After the World War II, the Tibetan Spaniel population started to grow. In 1966, the breed was imported to the United States. A few years later, in 1971, the Tibetan Spaniel Club of America (TSCA) was established. The AKC recognized the breed in 1984. Tibetan Spaniels entered the Non-Sporting Group of dogs and started to be popularized in the United States.
